Vasco Beat African Warriors

Vasco Da Gama recorded their 2nd win of the season when they travelled to the Free State this weekend to take on African Warriors.

Recent history favoured African Warriors with Vasco last recording a win against the Qwa Qwa-based side in 2012.

Roscoe Pietersen had a chance to put Vasco ahead in the 27th minute off a freekick, but his header was denied by the bar. 3 minutes later, Mbulelo Wambi was on target with his first of the game to give Vasco the lead.

The teams would head into the change rooms at half time with the score at 0 – 1.

After the break, Vasco saw off the heat and some pressure from African Warriors to hold onto the lead. Shortly before the final whistle, Wambi made it 2 – 0, completing his brace and sealing Vasco’s first 3 points away from home. The win sees Vasco move up one position on the NFD standings to 9th.

Vasco face Moroka Swallows this upcoming weekend at Parow Park.

Vasco Continue To Voyage Ahead

Vasco Da Gama are continuing their journey of voyaging ahead as they look ahead to the re-structuring of their youth structure and forming of their Youth Academy.

The recently held holiday programme at Parow Park was one part of the process of identifying talent to join the new Vasco Da Gama Youth Academy for 2016.

Players invited were between the ages of 10 to 14 and came from Vasco as well as outside talents who have been identified over the course of the year by our Scouting Department.

During the week the boys trained on four days for two-and-a-half hours each afternoon. The sessions were uniform across the groups and designed with two objectives;

1)      Provide the players with opportunities to develop and improve their ability

2)      Assess players on the criteria as set out for the Youth Academy teams by the Technical Staff

Most of the days training began with ball skills which led into 1 versus 1 drills, growing through 2 v 1 overloads, 2 v 2 and ending in games from 4 v 4 to 8 v 8. There were also exercises on passing and a high focus on possession games with overloads to develop and assess decision making skills.

While there were a number of players who were unable to attend, the talent was of a good level and the players certainly improved as the week went on, making it a great success.

The final outcome will see a large number of participants invited back to train with the rest of the 2015 Vasco squads as the Coaches and Scouts work towards finalising selection for the 2016 Academy teams.
